Darrel Smith was born in Maloy, Iowa April 20, 1924 into a large farming family of eight brothers and sisters. He enlisted in the Navy in December of 1942 to participate in WWII. Shortly thereafter, he met and then married Hazel Irene Wallis in September of 1945 and remained in this loving relationship for 58 years. This union gave him four daughters: Ina Lorraine (Lorry), Barbara Ann (Bobbi), Vicki Sue, and Jo Ellen; adopted son, Steven Smith-Hyde; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Darrel made the Navy his career and in 1955 was selected for Officer Candidate School. After his graduation, he and his family were stationed all over the United States as well as a three-year stay in Naples, Italy. During his career he was awarded a bronze star with Combat V as well as many other medals and citations. Darrel was well-traveled, visiting six of the seven continents, the last being Australia with his beloved wife Hazel. He retired from the Navy August 1, 1971 as a full commander. He was active in the Masons and was a Deputy District Grand Master with the Lodge in Drakes Branch, Virginia. Additionally, he joined in many civic activities in many of the places in which he lived. Upon the death of Hazel in 2004, Darrel resided in Williamsburg, VA for several years. He then reconnected with and eventually married Virginia Saunders Bloomer, an old friend from Wilmington, NC. Darrel and Ginger also had their share of adventures, including several cruises as well as travel across the United States visiting friends and relatives from coast to coast. When Ginger passed away in 2014, Darrel went into Trinity Grove Nursing Home where he was lovingly cared for by the incredible staff of this fine facility until his last day of June 27, 2016. A life done very well. “I am rejoicing in his glorious reunion. What a day! What a glorious day that will be!” A memorial celebrating Darrel’s life and his military service will be held at Masonboro Baptist Church, 1501 Beasley Rd, Wilmington, NC on August 14 at 1:00. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.nelsencares.com. Arrangements under the direction of Nelsen Williamsburg, Williamsburg, VA.
