Charles “Bob” R. Henderson, Jr. passed away at the age of 97 on Saturday, June 22, 2024 in Williamsburg, VA with his family at his side. He was born in Canton, NC on May 21, 1927. After graduating from high school, he joined the Army where he served his country faithfully and honorably for 20 years as a helicopter pilot and instructor. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and met his first wife of 44 years, Dagmar Richter, during his tour in Germany. After retiring from the Army in 1965 as a Chief Warrant Officer W-2, he continued to serve his country for an additional 23 years as a federal civil servant working for the Transportation Engineering Agency. He earned many awards and commendations during his service.
After retiring from federal civil service, he spent his time volunteering at his church, Williamsburg United Methodist and Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, along with his current wife, Susanne. In his retirement, he also enjoyed golf, family gatherings and traveling the world with his wife and good friends. He loved dogs and had one by his side most of his life.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Charles R. Henderson, Sr. and Martha Coleman; and his first wife, Dagmar Henderson. He is survived by his current wife of almost 30 years, Susanne Henderson; his daughters, Martha Larkin (William), Peggy Hunsucker (Garry) and Terry Cole (Skip); his stepchildren Bruce Ruddock (Ellen) and Laura Sowinski (Teddy); his sister Barbara Miller (Mike); his grandchildren, Christina Fontaine (Phil), Sandra Martin (Charles), Katherine Cannon (Eric), Glenn Smith II (Tiffany), and Lindsay Holmes (Drew); his step-grandchildren, Evan Ruddock, Thaddeus Sowinski (Courtney) and Haley Coronado (Carlos); his great grandchildren, Alex Martin, Will Martin, Ellis Cannon, Aiden Cannon, Lauren Smith, Glenn Smith III, Mason Smith and Addison Smith; his step-great grandchild, Archer Sowinski; a niece Kimberly DeMarce (Adrian and their son Jackson) and nephew, Peter Gross (Ina).
A visitation will be held at Nelsen Williamsburg, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA on Sunday, June 30, 2024 starting at 1:30 pm followed by a memorial service at 2:00 pm. Guests are invited to join the family for a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, if anyone wishes to make a charitable donation in Bob’s memory, please consider a children’s, animal’s or veteran’s charity of your choice. These were all worthy causes to him.
