Wayne was born on August 7, 1934, in Ames, Oklahoma to Oliver and Crystal Hayes, the fourth of seven children and raised on a farm.
After graduating high school, he traveled as a custom wheat cutter to Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas and worked in the oil fields. Wayne settled down in Kansas lived in Newton and Medicine Lodge and then Wichita where he met his first wife Carolyn Sue Willard and was married in October 1959 where they were married for 41 years until her death.
Wayne worked for his father-in-law’s construction company and helped build some of the iconic buildings in Wichita (the old Pizza Hut restaurants, Enterprise Elementary (old one demolished), Murdock Building). In 1964 Wayne was hired by the Wichita Police Department as a Mechanic in the garage. It later became known as the Central Maintenance Facility (police only know it as “CMF” their second home) where he worked for 33 years and in 1997 retired as Chief Mechanic. During that same time Wayne also held down a second job; at Sears & Roebuck Co. in the Automotive Center part time and retired after 25 years. While working 2 jobs, Wayne would also find time to work on cars at home helping officers with their personal vehicles.
Wayne enjoyed bowling, archery, horseshoes, frosting glass and gardening. Wayne loved and excelled at bowling he had several perfect games. Wayne was heavily involved with his church and was an Elder at Poplar Ave Church of Christ.
After the death of his first wife in 2001 Wayne met Paulette Goates while bowling on a league. Wayne married his second wife Paulette Goates in July 2013.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. first wife Carolyn Sue (Willard) Hayes, son David Lee Hayes.
Wayne is survived by current wife Lillie Paulette Goates of Wichita KS; daughter Deborah D (Hayes) Allen of Topeka KS; son Scott (Marilyn) Hayes of Maize KS; daughter Kathleen (Tim) (Hayes) Lee of Wichita KS; granddaughter Amanda (Allen) Kennedy; grandson Michael Allen of Topeka KS; granddaughter Brinkley (Hayes) Grado of Kansas City, Mo; granddaughter Tanner Hayes of Brandon, Florida; granddaughter Patricia Lee of Dodge City, KS; grandson Christopher Lee of Wichita KS; grandson David Salameno of Fort Worth Tx, granddaughter Ashley Jenkins of Kansas City Mo, and eight great-grandchildren; brother Larry Hayes of Claremore Oklahoma; dearly loved extended family; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
A visitation for Wayne will be held Saturday, January 6, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 West Highway 54, Wichita, KS 67209, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM.
