He was born July 10, 1927 to Rebecca and Herman T. Hixson on the family farm southeast of Arnett, Oklahoma. On March 11, 1946, Paul wed Betty Lee Burns, and after his tour of duty with the U.S. Army occupation forces in Japan, they began married life together. Upon his return to the U.S., he took a job as a roughneck. He and Betty followed the oil drilling rigs through Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado, then back to Oklahoma, until he incurred back injury that ended his oilfield vocation. With four young children, he attended diesel mechanics training and then began a career with Diesel Equipment Co. in Wichita.
Paul was a Christian and held membership at the Westside Church of the Nazarene for 50 years.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Betty Lee Burns Hixson, and children Debrah Jaeckel (Allen), Everett Hixson (Robin), Paula Jaeckel-Stine (Mike), and Kent Hixson (Cande). Survivors also include grandchildren Shawndra Montgomery (Robert), Krista Hall (Doug), Dayna Jaeckel, Ross Jaeckel, Aaron Hixson, Jeremy Jaeckel (Theresa), Andy Hixson (Dana), Maria Olson (Andrew) and Albert Hixson. Surviving great-grandchildren are Tanner Jaeckel, Jacob Hall (Jordan), Ben Hall (Sueshi), Samantha Montgomery, Grace Wehrle (Jackson), Michael Montgomery, Jarrod Ogle, Lexi Sneath, Kaylynn Robbins, Alissa Jaeckel, Serenity Jaeckel, Danae Loomis-Jaeckel, Piper Jaeckel, Aspen Jaeckel, Jameson Jaeckel, Max & James Hixson. Surviving great-great-grandchildren include Emerson Hall and Lily Hall.
Funeral arrangements for Paul D. Hixson include visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday April 11, 2021 at the Hillside Funeral Home West, 2929 W. 13th N., in Wichita. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2021 at the West Side Church of the Nazarene, 2300 S. Seneca in Wichita, with burial to follow at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, 19221 W. Maple St., north of Goddard. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Westside Church of the Nazarene or Goddard Lions Club.
