Jerry Smith was born in Wichita, KS and attended Wichita North High School. He played football, basketball and baseball. He always enjoyed either playing or watching sports on TV.
He entered the Army at the age of 19 and worked in the finance department. He served 3 years and was honorably discharged.
He met his beautiful wife Lucrecia Chavez dancing at Rock Castle and soon after they were engaged and then married on September 15, 1965. They were married 59 years before his passing.
He also enjoyed racing his Austin Healy in his early years. Jerry and Lucrecia enjoyed riding their Harley to travel around and helped in the annual Toy Run. With his family, he enjoyed going on vacations (camping, hiking and biking). He enjoyed the annual festivals that was in and around Wichita, KS like the River Run.
He and Lucrecia attended Church of Christ on Clark/Water and moved to Northside Church of Christ on North Meridian. He has always followed Christ throughout his life. He worked for Meadow Gold Dairy in his early years before retiring from Derby (Coastal) refinery where he worked for nearly 30 years.
Jerry and Lucrecia opened their hearts and home to two special boys that they adopted in Houston, TX. He was very involved with both his two boys and taught them how to fix and take care of things with their own hands. He would attend their wrestling meets even after leaving his third shift. He was loved by his family and friends and will be missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Lena (Head) Smith of Wichita, KS; and his sister's: Wanda of Compton, MD and Mabel of Wichita, KS.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Lucrecia Smith; his children: John Smith (Jayne) of Independence, MO and Mark Smith (Crystal) of Buckley, WA; grandchildren: Katherine, Michael (McKenzi), Phoenix, Austyn, Dallas, Lucca, and Penelope; his brother, Alfred Smith of Denver, CO.; and his great- grandchildren: Wyatt, Liam, Taylor, Dakota, Brooklyn, Achilles, Oliver, Mason, and Axel.
A visitation for Jerry will be held Thursday, February 29, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 West Highway 54, Wichita, KS 67209. A funeral service will occur Friday, March 1, 2024 at 1:00 PM with interment to follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory in the Garden of Prayer, Lot 188 A, Space 1.
