A proud graduate of Wichita North High School in 1952, Darrell married the love of his life, Marlene Lee Alexander, and together they began their family. Their first child, Sharol, was born but tragically passed away at just six months old. Darrell’s early career began at Beech Aircraft as a riveter, but he soon enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1953, where he completed his basic training at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and was deployed to El Toro, California. During his time there, he cherished the opportunity to spend quality time with his older brother, Ace (Asa Jr.), who lived in Anaheim. It was also in California that Darrell and Marlene were blessed with their second child, Alex. After his honorable discharge in 1956, Darrell returned to Wichita, where he and Marlene welcomed two more children, Robin and Kelly, completing their family.
While remaining in the Marine Reserves, Darrell began his civilian career with the Railway Express Agency (REA) as a CDL truck driver, a job he held for nearly two decades. In addition to his work with REA, he worked part-time with Brinks Armored Car to support his growing family. Following the bankruptcy of REA in 1973, Darrell transitioned to a new role with Goldsmiths, an office furniture and supply company, where he delivered and installed commercial office systems until his retirement in 1996.
In 1996, Darrell faced the sudden loss of his beloved wife, Marlene, in a tragic car accident. After leaving their three-acre dream home in Beaver Creek, he returned to the Wichita area. In time, Darrell found companionship in Colleen Waller, who became a loving partner and dear friend. Together, they built many cherished memories, and her family became an important part of his life.
Sonny was passionate about many things. He loved the great outdoors—whether it was hunting, fishing, car racing, four-wheeling, or camping. Sonny had a special affection for his pets, including Nikki, his toy fox terrier, and Taco, his chihuahua.
Darrell is survived by his children, Alex (Susie) Isham, Robin Schermerhorn, and Kelly (Terri) Isham; grandchildren, Brian, Shawn, Paul, Simon, Erica, and Mason; great-grandchildren, Rhys, Lola, Griffin, Ruby, and Ophira; as well as his niece Cecilia and nephew Mike.
