Mary "Elaine" McWilliams, 86, of West Bloomfield, passed away on July 3, 2024. She was born on September 25, 1937 in Long Beach, CA, to parents Edward and Mary Sommers. Elaine lived a vibrant life that spanned continents and cultures, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Elaine's early education took her to boarding schools across Europe, where she developed a love for learning and culture. She later attended finishing school there, honing her social graces and appreciation for the arts. In 1953, she married Arthur "Bud" McWilliams, and together they shared nearly 40 years of love and adventure until his passing in 1993.
Throughout her life, Elaine embraced a nomadic spirit, living in various locales around the globe and traveling extensively. Among her favorite places were Maui and England, where she cherished the landscapes and communities. Her love for dogs was evident, and she always had a faithful companion by her side.
Elaine had a voracious appetite for reading, consuming a book a day with her collection of 24 pairs of reading glasses strategically placed around her home. She enjoyed playing the stock market and was an avid online shopper, finding joy in discovering new items on Amazon.
Above all, Elaine was devoted to her family, working tirelessly to ensure her children had every opportunity for a good life. She leaves behind a legacy of love and strength that will be carried on by her children Sharon (Thomas) Earnest, Janet Rockwell, Edward McWilliams, and Christie (Justin) McWilliams; grandchildren Christopher Laughter, Michael Capps, Ryan Rockwell, Trevor (Michaela) Hughes, Kelsey Carter, Chloe Abendroth, and David Abendroth; great-grandchildren Serenity Hughes, Kayson Hughes, Langston Capps, and Silas Capps; siblings Steven (Karen) Sommers and Carol (James) Fauci, along with nieces and nephews who will fondly remember her.
Elaine is reunited in death with her beloved husband, Arthur "Bud" McWilliams, and her parents Edward and Mary Sommers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elaine's honor to Work of Heart Animal Rescue.
