David James Birdsong, 68, passed away on April 11, 2025, in Pontiac, Michigan. Born on September 19, 1956, in Howell, Michigan, David lived a life marked by creativity, curiosity, and a deep love for his family and community.
From an early age, David demonstrated a natural talent for connecting with people. He began honing his skills as a salesman as a teenager while working in his family's pet and feed store, Birdsong’s Pet and Feed, located in downtown Brighton. Over the years, he held many jobs that reflected his versatility and work ethic. Yet it was behind the lens of a camera where David found his greatest joy and fulfillment.
A gifted photographer with an eye for capturing the beauty in everyday life, David became a beloved figure in Pontiac’s artistic community. His photographs were featured prominently on buildings throughout the city as part of the Canvas Pontiac initiative. He also shared his passion through teaching photography workshops, inspiring others to see the world through a creative lens. Until closing his photography studio in 2020, David remained an active contributor to Pontiac’s cultural landscape.
David’s talents extended beyond photography. He was an accomplished musician who enjoyed playing guitar and had a lifelong love of sports—especially baseball and the Detroit Tigers. A self-described history enthusiast, he took particular interest in the rich history of Michigan. His appreciation for technology and computers further reflected his wide-ranging interests.
Above all else, David cherished time spent with his family. He is lovingly remembered by his three daughters: Amy Birdsong Irish; Sarah Oesch and her husband Jon; and Alison Brewer and her husband Josh. He was a proud grandfather to James David Irish; Norah Rose Oesch; and Aidan Douglas and Evelyn Grace Brewer. His brother Jack Birdsong, his sister Deanna Birdsong, and brother-law Ron Sell also survive him; along with many nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents, John and Beth Birdsong; his sister Annette Sell; and his grandson Lucas Avery Oesch.
David's ashes will be interned at Chilson Hills Church in Brighton, Michigan, near his parents. The family will have a private service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate in his memory to either Now I Lay Myself to Sleep (https://www.nowilaymedowntosleep.org/donate/) or GRIT Gives (GRIT Gives, 2803 Hartun, Brighton, MI 48113).
David’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched—with his photographs, music, and unwavering love for those closest to him. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
