Virginia “Ruth” Selle was born July 14, 1912 in Kansas City MO. Her family moved to Colorado in 1918 and attended school in Arvada. Like her mother, she enjoyed gardening very colorful flowers. In later life, she was a member of the Arvada Garden Club. When her mom died, Ruth's 4th grade teacher gave free piano lessons so she could play like her mom who was an accomplished classical pianist.
While in high school, she lettered in basketball and tennis. She also developed her life long love of Baseball because she enjoyed watching the World Series. Her favorite team has always been the New York Yankees. For her 100th birthday, the Yankees sent her several pieces of memorabilia which she treasured like gold.
Her family attended Arvada Methodist Church and she played the organ and taught in Sunday school over the years. Ruth continued attending as long as her health permitted. She loved to properly dress each day.
Ruth's grandfather travelled extensively since he sold McCormick Reaper farm equipment. He brought home mementos from each trip. This helped spark her interest in travel. Over her life, Ruth was able to travel to many places in the states as well as abroad.
Ruth worked at Woolworths, a local phone company, volunteered with the Red Cross (during war time), John Hancock Insurance and a Hallmark Card store in addition to being a homemaker since her early teens.
Ruth and her husband Carl enjoyed taking their grandchildren on camping and boating trips. Her self bio starts with a quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes: “To reach the port of Heaven, we must sail, sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it – but we must sail, not drift or lie at anchor”. She lived that quote through her life as she remained energetic and spry through out her life time.
Ruth celebrated her 100th birthday in 2012 with a large family gathering. She died on January 3rd and will be interned alongside her husband Carl who proceeded her. Ruth is survived by her daughter, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.
Services Friday, January 11, 2013, 12pm, in the Chapel of Peace located on the grounds of Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary & Cemetery.
