Gene was born on November 26, 1926, in Dale, Wisconsin, the son of Paul and Rose (Witt) Price. He had three older sisters and three younger brothers. He was married to Shirley Bailey on May 15, 1949, in Hayden, Colorado.
After Gene graduated from Weyauwega High School in Wisconsin, he enlisted in the US Army. He was on a troop ship in the Pacific when WWII ended. He served the rest of his stint helping repatriate American POWs in the Philippines.
Following his honorable discharge, he came to Denver to visit some Army friends and never left. He met his wife, Shirley, while working at Reese’s Diner in Downtown Denver. He served her the best BLT sandwich in town and their relationship started from there. A few years later, in 1953, he started his career in broadcasting, working at numerous radio stations as a “disc jockey” and then ultimately switching to the news department where he covered many major news stories in the Denver Metro area. Gene also worked as the Public Address announcer for the Denver Spurs, a professional minor league hockey team in the late 1960’s and moved on to be the public address announcer for the ABA basketball team, the Denver Rockets and then the Denver Nuggets when they merged with the NBA in 1976.
Gene retired from Broadcasting in 1989 and continued to enjoy his lifelong hobby of restoring antique furniture, old slot machines and gaming equipment as well as pursuing his passion for fishing, even going so far as to design and market his own fishing lures and attractant scent. His greatest enjoyment was sharing his faith and spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids.
Gene is survived by his two children, David (Sandy) Price of Broomfield, Karen (Richard) Price-Eakins of Aurora; his seven grandchildren, Stephanie Winters, Nick Price, Jason Owen, Janelle Bueghly, Justin Lauck, Jennifer Shannon and Jayme McMahon; thirteen great grandchildren Jaxson and Evie Winters; Kinslee, Minka and Lincoln Owen; Bryson, Brylie and Haylie Bueghly; Lilly Lauck; Kian and Kensington Shannon; Annalynn and Aidan McMahon; as well as one sister, Alice Brose; sisters-in-law, Judy Price and Lynn Price.
Gene is pre-deceased by his wife, Shirley; two sisters, Pauline Hanson and Irene Peterson; three brothers, Roger Price, Jerry Price and Don Price; three brothers in law, William Hanson, Jack Brose, Dick Peterson; and one sister-in-law, Diane Price.
A Memorial Service/Celebration of Life for Gene will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday March 17, 2023, at LIFE Church, 3400 Industrial Ln, Broomfield, CO 80020.
