John Robert McCracken was born March 16,1933 in Shenandoah,IA to Cecil and Christine McCracken. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Reverend David McCracken of Sonoma, CA, son David G. McCracken of Aurora, CO, and great grand baby, Dylan Duran, of Greeley, CO.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marline McCracken, daughters, Lorri (Ellie) Duran, Kathy (Nathan) Stone and Annette (Jack) Lorenzini, eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren, who he adored greatly.
John taught math in the Aurora Public Schools from 1955 - 1988. After he retired from teaching, he became very active in his community, serving four years on Aurora City Council, and volunteering at Parker Adventist Hospital, the Red Cross, H&R Block, and countless other civic, church, and non-profit organizations. He also jumped into his role as full time grandpa with both feet by helping homeschool some of his grandchildren (he knew a thing or two about math), and helping anyone else that needed help with homework, budgeting, and taxes. He was an avid sports fan who loved watching his grandchildren play baseball, softball, football, soccer and participate in martial arts, and any other activity they might be involved in. He also loved watching the Colorado Rockies, from his recliner at home.
John loved people and loved deep conversations with all. He was always ready to tell a joke, offer great wisdom, or just sit and listen intently. He cared deeply for others and extended generosity to those in need. He taught so many the importance of giving back.
His favorite pastime, other than supporting his family, was people/prayer watching. “PW-ing,” as he called it. His favorite spots were King Soopers parking lot and Red-tailed Hawk Park. He would treat himself to McDonalds or Wendy’s 4 for 4 with Marline and sit in his van watching and praying. He frequently made friends with the employees who gathered shopping carts and would have conversations with complete strangers to give encouragement.
John was a man of great faith. He was humbly grateful for the gift of salvation that he never took for granted. The love and support he exemplified, the humor he shared with others, the wisdom he bestowed, and the integrity he displayed...his legacy ... will live on in the hearts of his family and those he affected. He will be greatly missed and remembered forever.
