Joyce was born on the farm North of McTaggart on November 6, 1933. She was the 10th of 11 living children born to Milton and Julia Stein. The Stein family resided on the farm until the house burned down in 1948, causing the family to convert a granary into a small home. Several of the family members had to reside at farms in the surrounding area due to the lack of space in the granary. The family purchased a house in Weyburn at 128 - 10th ST. Joyce took most of her education at Waverley School a country school near their farm home and after moving to Weyburn attended Haig School. On April 12, 1950 Joyce married Ivan Wayne Moore of Trossachs, SK. They lived with Ivan’s parents Emanuel and Elizabeth Moore from 1950 to 1953, until they could afford to purchase a small house and move it onto land 1/4 mile south. As the family grew, a larger house was necessary so Abbot School was purchased and made into a home. The family resided in this home until Ivan’s parents retired to Weyburn. In 1966, Ivan Joyce and family moved back to the homestead farm. The younger 5 children were born after the move. Joyce and Ivan resided in the farm home until 1996, at which time Ivan suffered a stroke and Joyce was not able to live alone. From there she lived with her daughters, Teresa and/or Christa until her health started to fail. On March 18, 2005 Joyce was admitted to the Tatagwa View Care Facility for long-term care, and remained there until her passing on December. 23, 2010. Joyce has always been a quiet, caring and reserved person with a kind heart. She worked very hard most of her years as raising 14 children is not a simple task. Joyce loved to be outside. For many years she milked cows (as many as 24) and the cream was shipped for income. Another enjoyment was horseback riding. On many occasions Joyce would set out on “SILVER” an old grey mare, to round up the cows. As the herd law was open, the cows could graze in many road ditches or coulees. It was usually after dark by the time she returned. Joyce never had much spare time to mend so “ALL-SO” became her best friend for mending blue jeans. She also baked the best bread and beans. Many hours were spent canning, pickling, gardening, and killing chickens in the fall. In her later years she enjoyed doing puzzles, word searches, crafts, traveling to dances with family, bingo games, visiting, and just watching her family grow. Joyce had a wonderful sense of humor and a genuine concern for community and family members. She loved music as she may solely break into songs such as: BIG BOUQUET OF ROSES, THE STRAWBERRY ROAN, GET OVER IT, THE OLD GRAY MARE, and BY THE OLD MILL STREAM. Many of times she recited her favorite poem TREES.
I think that I shall never see,
A poem as lovely as a tree;
A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed,
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear,
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain,
Who intimately lives with rain;
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
Joyce celebrated 46 years of married life; experienced the birth of 14 children; welcomed 47 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and three foster great grand children into her life; witnessed the marriage of 12 of her children and 12 grand children. The last 6 years of her life were due mainly to her strong will to live and the excellent care she received at Tatagwa View. She enjoyed a very full life and lived for her family. Joyce gave her family one last Christmas on Sat. Dec. 18, 2010 and then said GOOD-BYE. Her suffering is over. A Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. from the Grace United Church, Weyburn, Saskatchewan with Reverend M. Barnabas officiating. Interment followed in Trossachs Cemetery, Trossachs, Saskatchewan. Pallbearers were her son’s. Donations in memory of Joyce may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation. Arrangements under the direction of Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, SK.
