Melissa Ann Sundquist, 50, of South Glastonbury, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2023 with her loving husband at her side, after an 8 year battle with cancer. The courage she showed in her battle was inspirational to everyone around her and Heaven has gained a truly special angel!
Melissa and Erik were married for over 28 years and she leaves behind her five sons Connor, Corson, Garrett, Gavin and Brayden. Melissa’s true joy was being their mother and Erik would be the first to give her all the credit for the amazing young men they are.
Melissa was a kind and gentle soul, affectionately known as Sweet Melissa. She was the most beautiful, caring, sympathetic, selfless person who always put others before herself. She was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister and a faithful friend who was loved beyond words. Melissa worked as a bookkeeper in the family business for over 27 years. She enjoyed traveling to Florida and the Caribbean and spending time at the beach. Her favorite vacation spot was Anna Maria Island. She thrived for many years in her role as a hockey mom, driving the boys to games all over the Northeast. Always the life of the party, she would often organize dance parties and if there was a microphone, she would belt out her favorite songs.
Born in Hartford, to Conrad and Eleanor (McMurray) Winalski whose hearts are broken saying goodbye to their youngest of five children. She is also survived by a brother, Conrad Winalski of Killingworth; three sisters, Cheryl Zocco and her husband James of East Hartford, Karen Stebbins and her husband Peter of Old Saybrook and Susan Cirinna and her husband Roberto of Rocky Hill. She had a treasured relationship with her nieces and nephews, in some ways more like that of siblings. Melissa also leaves behind the families of Arvid and Emily Sundquist as well as her godparents Steve and Elaine Donovan.
The family would like to thank the staff at Yale Smilow Cancer Hospital for their care of Melissa over the years, specifically Dr. Digiovanna, Michelle Corso, Dr. Lustberg, Alice Wnuk, and her surgeon Dr. Zuckerman. We would also like to thank the nurses and PCA’s on Smilow North 12 for the years of care and compassion.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7p.m. on Thursday, (September 21st) at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday (September 22nd) at St. James Church (St. Josephine Bakhita Parish), 767 Elm St., Rocky Hill. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be held privately in Holy Cross Cemetery, Glastonbury.
