Sylvia (nee Schouw), 81, died peacefully in her home on May 11. Born December 28, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Frida and Elvin Schouw, she was a resident of Montvale since 1965.
Having been raised and educated through college in Norway, she endured the Nazi occupation in her hometown of Stavanger during World War II and remembered fondly the celebration in the streets after the surrender of Germany. She moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1951 and married Erik J. Friis in 1955. She was employed by the Home Insurance Co. in New York City before raising a family and later worked in the accounting department at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton until her retirement in 1999.
She was predeceased by her husband of forty-four years, Erik J. Friis in 1999 and is survived by her children Erik S. Friis and Elin Friis Kabo, as well as her four grandchildren—Emily Friis, James Friis, Peter Kabo, and Daniel Kabo.
She was a lover of all animals, especially cats and dogs, and particularly fond of her Golden Retrievers and Cocker Spaniels. She loved to travel and on many occasions visited her relatives in Norway.
Friends may call at the Becker Funeral Home; 219 Kinderkamack Road in Westwood, NJ (www.becker-funeralhome.com) Visitation hours will be on Tuesday, May 15th from 2 to 4 P.M. and from 7 to 9 P.M. and a memorial service will be held from 10 to 11 A.M. on Wednesday, May 16th.
