Joan Ann Meier (nee Nehrings) of Cresskill, NJ born July 12, 1940 the daughter of Anna and John Nehrings. After a hard fought two year battle with lung cancer Joan died peacefully at home with her family by her side on July 8, 2024. She is survived by her husband of nearly 63 years Edwin C. Meier, her son Robert and his wife Wendy of Old Tappan, NJ, son Steven and his wife Chandra of Norwood, NJ, as well as grandchildren Christopher Meier and Scott Meier. She was predeceased by her sister Marian Terminato and granddaughter Danielle Meier. She was born in Jersey City, NJ and raised in West New York and North Bergen, NJ. Even with her average stature Joan was a star teenage athlete and she had a celebrated career as a basketball player. She later met and married her husband Edwin in 1961 and began living in North Bergen, NJ. Following the birth of their first son they moved north from Hudson County to the "country”, settling in Cresskill, NJ where she had lived for the past 60 years. She was previously employed by McGraw Hill Publishing in New York City and the Hudson Dispatch Newspaper but her passion had always been cooking. She had worked for many years as a cook and server in a variety of restaurants in Bergen and Rockland counties. Not many a day went by where she wasn't cooking up something in her kitchen. During her years in Cresskill Joan served as the president of the PTA and volunteered as a library assistant at Edward H. Bryan School. She also served as a deacon and an elder in her church, The Reformed Church on the Hill of Cresskill. Joan was also known for her steadfast support of charities, donating regularly to more than ten charitable organizations.
As per her wishes, a private funeral was held for the immediate members of her family at Fairview Cemetery in Fairview, NJ. Donations to the St. Jude's Children Hospital are welcome.
