Hugh Drum, a fifty-year resident of Closter, NJ passed to his heavenly Father on September 26th after a long illness. Hugh was born at West Point, NY on September 12, 1944 to Captain Thomas Johnson and his wife Anna Carroll Drum. Hugh was the grandchild of General Hugh A. Drum, after whom Fort Drum is named. He is survived by his wife Sandy Johnson (nee Laub) and his son and daughter-in-law Patrick and Kyoko Johnson of Northvale, NJ.
Hugh attended New York Military Academy and graduated Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, NJ before entering the Army, where he served in Vietnam.
Hugh was first a salesman in the bakery products industry, working with Keebler Biscuit Co. and Table Talk Pies. He then served as a sales manager at ITT Wonder Bread. After leaving the bakery products industry, he sold office supplies for Tower Crossman and Northern State Office Supply.
In his later years he was founder and innkeeper of the Crown Point Bed and Breakfast, which he owned jointly with his wife Sandy. They operated this inn at Crown Point, NY for over 20 years.
Hugh was a member of the Lion’s Club in Closter, NJ and a Eucharistic Minister at both R.C. Church of the Assumption in Emerson, NJ and Sacred Heart Church in Crown Point, NY. He Liked golf and played at the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic at Pinehurst, NC and was a supporter of The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Music was his life-long love, starting as a member of Up with People and later writing songs and performing at a 2009 V Foundation fundraiser in Florida.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, September 29 at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM at Church of the Assumption, 29 Jefferson Avenue, Emerson, NJ on Friday, September 30. Burial will follow at Westwood Cemetery.
