Mildred Marie Wyatt (Millie) was born October 2, 1928 to Walter (Dick) Wyatt and Hattie Casteel Wyatt in Des Arc, Arkansas. Des Arc was and is an agricultural town and her parents hired out farming crops on various farms. They (and she) picked a lot of cotton in their day!
Mildred had an older sister, Mary, a younger brother, Homer, and a younger sister, Carolyn. Mary and Homer preceded her in death. Her sister, Carolyn, resides in Hot Springs, Arkansas. They had a loving family and worked hard their entire lives.
In December 1946 Mildred married Herman Ferguson and they had a daughter, Belinda, and a son, Dennis. They married in Flint, Michigan, moved back to Des Arc shortly after to be near family, then moved to California in early 1948 to make a better living for themselves as they established their family. They raised their family on Radnor Avenue in Long Beach until their divorce in 1965.
Mildred – or Granny as everyone called her – loved her five grandchildren very much and they were an important part of her life. She would always say, “Give Granny some sugar,” meaning she was looking for a hug and a kiss. This carried on to her great-grandchildren as well – all thirteen of them! She loved them and they loved her right back!
Mildred attended waitressing school at Long Beach City College when she arrived in California and spent her many working years as a waitress at some of Long Beach’s finer dinner houses. She loved sewing and after retiring from waitressing made thousands of holiday crafts which she very successfully sold at various craft fairs. She moved back to her childhood town in Des Arc, Arkansas for a while after retiring and took up quilting many a blanket at the senior center quilting club. She also loved going to dances where she could swing and western dance with the best of them. She moved back to California to be closer to her grandkids in 2009. She sat in the grandstands cheering for every great-grandchild on the baseball/softball field. She had a cantankerous relationship with some of the umpires!
Always fun loving, in her early days, she loved the slot machines in Las Vegas and the horse races wherever they were running. She was usually the life of every party or get together.
She will be missed by her loving family, her surviving sister, many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Rest in peace Millie/Granny!
