William V. Scruggs of Westlake Village, California, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019, at the age of 94. He was born to Grady and Dorothy Scruggs on August 4, 1925, in Brevard, North Carolina, and grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, graduating from Lee H. Edwards High School in 1942.
Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1944 at the age of 17 and was in training but discharged in 1945 when WWII ended. He attended the Citadel Military College in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1942 to 1943, left to serve his country and returned to the Citadel from 1946 to 1948, receiving a B.S. in Commerce. He was listed in “Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges” in 1948. Following graduation, he was employed as a sales representative from Moore Business Forms and as assistant manager of the Credit Bureau of Columbia.
He married Nell Banister of Asheville, North Carolina, on February 26, 1949. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year.
Bill joined the FBI in 1951 and worked in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Pomona and West Covina. He retired in 1979 as a supervisor in the Los Angeles field office after 28 years of service.
Bill and Nell moved to Westlake Village in 1972. They joined Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1972, where Bill was a church deacon and volunteered as an usher and member of the Fix-It Crew, performing church maintenance. They attended the church for 47 years and a plaque on the church library honors their contributions.
Bill is survived by his wife Nell; daughter Sharon and her husband Ken McDaniel, and grandsons Austin and Jackson McDaniel; son Wesley, his wife Lisa, and grandsons Grant, Jake, William and Russell Scruggs; daughter Teri, her husband Don Ernst, grandson Taylor Ernst and his wife Ashley; granddaughter Ali, her husband Mike Evans, and their only great-grandson, Owen Evans.
In lieu of flowers and because Bill loved dogs, the family requests donations be made in his honor to Paw Works; www.pawworks.org.
A celebration of life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Westlake Village at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2019. Arrangements are being handled through Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Mortuary in Westlake Village.
