It is with deep sadness that the family of Matthew Stephen Curtin, better known to all as Matt Curtin, announce his sudden and unexpectedly passing in the early morning hours of June 29, 2018 at his home in Tualatin, Oregon. Matt, his wife, Alison, and young son, Jaxson, had moved to Oregon in October 2017.
Matt was born on May 26, 1970. He grew up in a military family, so his early life was an adventure moving from one location to the next. This included 4 years being spent in Germany in the late 70’s and early 80’s followed by a move to the San Francisco Bay area where he remained until graduating from St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in 1988. Later that same summer he and his family moved to Moreno Valley, CA. In 1991 Matt and his family moved to Thousand Oaks, CA. Matt resided in the Conejo Valley area until this past October.
During the 1990’s Matt attended Moorpark College. He worked in a variety of restaurants including Bodega Bay, What’s The Catch, and Dockside. Matt had a very kind heart. He enjoyed engaging people and was truly interested in what they had to say. He also felt the need to contribute to the betterment of his community by serving others. These qualities led him to become a Deputy with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. In his initial two years he was a member of the Department’s tackle football team better known as the Badgers. For his law enforcement acumen Matt was honored with the Officer of the Year Award in November 2005. To further his career aspirations, Matt applied himself and received a BS in Business Administration from San Diego State University during his time with the Department. Matt’s primary extracurricular activities included going to the gym and staying fit. It was a passion which gave him endless hours of pleasure. Through it he made many, many friends in the Conejo Valley.
Matt was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, godfather, and a steadfast friend to countless others. Matt leaves behind his wife and young son, Alison and Jaxson; mother and father, Paula Phelan of Sherwood, OR and Stephen Curtin of Scotts Valley, CA; brother, Andy Curtin of Maui, HI; sister Stephanie Horton and brother-in-law Dan Horton of Sherwood, OR; niece, Ella Curtin of Sherwood, OR; stepfather, Scott Phelan of Sherwood, OR; stepmother, Carolee Curtin of Scotts Valley, CA; father-in-law and mother-in-law Jerry and Mary Fido of Thousand Oaks, CA; father-in-law and mother-in-law Richard and Noel Stevens of Tualatin, OR; numerous aunts and uncles, Pam Nickerson of Moreno Valley, CA; Jim and Carol O’Neill of Wickenburg, AZ; Chris Curtin of El Segundo, CA and Suzanne Curtin of Ventura, CA; Barbara Walker and John Bishop of Firestone, CO; Laura Curtin and Jeanne Reincke of Long Beach, CA; grandaunt Virginia Curtin of Hawthorne, CA; numerous cousins including; Ann O’Neill, Cookie O’Neill Martin, Jimmy O’Neill, Ryan Walker, Emily Craig, Sam Curtin, and Max Curtin; stepbrother Richard Palesano (Jenn) of Scotts Valley, CA, stepsister Cassie Schwartz (Frank) of Santa Cruz, CA, stepbrother Garratt Boyden of Pleasanton, CA and stepbrother Greg Phelan (Katie) of Roseville, CA.
Matthew thoroughly enjoyed his career with the Sheriff’s Department. He was a Senior Deputy at the time of his passing. As a son, no one could be finer than Matt. He was a true gift from God. The depth of our sorrow at his passing is unmeasurable. God rest his soul!
