J.W. was a lifelong resident of Westlake, he was born in Lake charles to John G. and Claudia Bertrand Canter on October 28, 1949 and was a 1968 graduate of Marion High School. He is a United States Marine Corp Veteran, serving in Vietnam and then holding the office of 2nd Vice Commander of Larry "Goose" Hetzler Memorial American Legion Post 407. J.W. loved to cook and is said to have taught half of the men in Westlake how to cook by starting out, cutting the onions and sausage. He retired from Lyondell Basell's.
J.W. was preceded in death by his parents, John G. Canter and Claudia Bertrand Canter, and father-in-law, Virgil "Pete" Spears.
He is survived by his wife Amy Canter of Westlake, mother in law, Marie Spears of Westlake, sister in law Gail Crochet of Westlake. Sons; Casey Canter of Moss Bluff and Byron Canter and wife DeShelle of Westlake, sisters; Darlene C. Cherry of Angleton TX., Molly Doyle and husband Paul of Spokane WA. He is also survived by three grandchildren; Mia' Jo'lie Canter, Jacie Brynn Tarver, Demi Klaire Canter and a great grandchild "little JW" Josie Lyn Sonnier.
Visitation will be held at Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake on Sunday November 5, 2023 from 3:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. Funeral Services will be held on Monday November 6, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Hixson Funeral Home - Westlake with burial to follow in New Ritchie Cemetery.
