Dear Greg & family,
I was so sad to hear of your mother's death. I knew Denise through Aquafit at Hollyburn Country Club. But our association was also through swimming--Michael & Katy shared that with you years ago. I have informed them , & they both send their deepest condolences, as do I. Denise was such a great lady--we always had a good chat in the pool, or on the seawall when we bumped into each other.
I am sadly  unable to come to the funeral, due to another commitment, but my thoughts & prayers will be with you as you say goodbye to your lovely mother.

We are having a MASS offered for her this Saturday on our cruise ship on the Pacific Ocean.

My Aunt Denise was also my Godmother and was always larger than life to me. My earliest memory of her was as a two year old looking up at her beautiful face as she took my hand and walked me across the tarmac to the aeroplane that was to take her to Melbourne. At two I didn’t realize that this lovely woman was an outstanding athlete, an Olympic fencer who had also received major recognition for her dancing. Melbourne was the city hosting the Olympics so my remembering that plane that took her away to become a fencing star was just a blink in her remarkable life journey. She was a force of nature whose energy and spirit were as boundless as her capacity to love, and she was fearless to the end of her life.
She was always greatly missed by her Mother and siblings when she married her beloved fellow Olympian, Ed Wild and settled in Canada, but despite the vast distance, she was the best communicator with letters and phone calls and eventual return visits to Australia. She made the journey to maintain that sense of belonging that comes from being part of a family, and took great pains to check on relatives and friends alike, welcoming so many into her home in Vancouver. Her heart was her homeland, a place where everyone felt loved and accepted.
As a fellow Aussie expat Denise understood the difficulties I had in moving to America, and, she was a constant source of encouragement. She was also the keeper of our stories and she took us on journeys through the annals of our family history. From tales of her own father who crossed the vast ocean from Ireland for a better life in Australia, to stories of surviving through the Depression and the incredible sacrifices her Mother made to feed and clothe her children. Aunty Denise connected us to our roots and was a blessing in our lives that will never dim.
