November 4, 1935 – July 17th 2012
Our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Brother, and friend was eased from his pain from a short, yet valiant fight with cancer on the morning of July 17th, 2012. Vern was born on November 4th, 1935 in Riverdale Utah to J.O. and Ruth Mitchell. After spending his childhood trapping, hunting and fishing on the banks of the Weber River in Riverdale, Vern served his country in the United States Air Force. He spent four years stationed as an air traffic controller in Germany. Shortly after returning, Vern married the love of his life, Ardyce Lee Anderson. From that point on, the two were inseparable and remained at each other’s side for over the next 50 years. They had three children. Vern was in the construction industry working for Hoffman Homes early on and then later for Wasatch Electric. He was a master carpenter, having constructed many of the neighborhoods found throughout the Salt Lake valley, Cell towers throughout the intermountain west, and the beginnings of the first light rail lines in Salt Lake City. He was a hard working man who put in more work in an average day than most of us would put in in an entire week and had the leather hands and case hardened tan to prove it. After retiring, Vern and Ardyce moved to Manila, Utah on the shores of Flaming Gorge Reservoir. He could finally put away the tool belt and spend all his time doing his three favorite things: Fishing, spending time with his grandchildren, and giving “Grandma Mitch” a hard time. If “Gramps”, as he was known, was giving you a hard time, you knew he liked you. The more, the better. He had a quick witted, ‘roundabout sense of humor, magnetic personality, and judged no one. He is survived by his wife; Ardyce Lee Mitchell. His three children; daughter Teri Mitchell, daughter Kathy Kenner (Le), son James (Jim) Mitchell (Barbara); brother Larry and sister Geniece. Vern is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by mother, father, and Mandi Lee Kenner (grandchild). Viewing will be held on Friday, the 20th from 6 pm to 8 pm at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 W. 4100 So. Funeral services will be held Saturday, the 21st at 10 am, also at Valley View. Graveside services will take place at the Manila Cemetery in Manila, Utah at 3 pm later that afternoon.
