JoAnne was born October 7, 1934 to Fred Amos and Athalia Gay Lewis in Provo, Utah. During her childhood, her family lived in Cedar City, Parowan, Spanish Fork, and Provo, where she attended Lincoln High school and met her future husband.
On August 27, 1953, JoAnne married Leland LeRay DeLange in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. In the years to come, they would become the proud parents of four children. Schooling and work would take them from Utah County to Salt Lake County, with a stop in Cape Canaveral, Florida along the way. In 1960, they settled in Granger, Utah, which would later become known as West Valley City. JoAnne remained in West Valley City for over 50 years. Due to her declining health, she left her home in West Valley City to move closer to family in South Jordan. She continued to make many new friends that cared and served her for the past several years.
JoAnne was always active in the community through PTA, scouting, and various sports programs. As a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she served in a variety of callings and often more than one at a time. Her favorite calling in the church was teaching cultural refinement lessons. This led to her love of travel and history. She was a talented pianist from a very young age so in addition to other callings, she almost always had an assignment as an accompanist on either the piano or the organ. She played for many stake roadshows and musicals. One of her most interesting callings was that of Primary President to 48 Cambodian children whose language she didn’t speak.
As a family, JoAnne and Leland opened their home to numerous children through juvenile protection and foster care programs. They even shared their home for a short time with an immigrant family from Vietnam.
JoAnne’s interests ranged from arts to athletics. JoAnne traveled the world, and was a frequent patron of the theatre. She loved baseball and faithfully supported the BYU Cougars football team but her greatest love and enduring legacy was, and will be, her family. She was loved by all who knew her but none so much as her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
JoAnne is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister-Nancy (Verl) Lamb.
She is survived by sisters, Linda and Dee Dee, four children, LeAnne (Tim) Adams, Lewis (Marianne) DeLange, Kathleen (Brian) Sorensen, and Kyle (Gina) DeLange, 16 grandchildren, and 35 great grandchildren.
She was “One of a Kind” and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Funeral Services for JoAnne will be held Friday, June 28th at the Valley View Memorial Park and Funeral home 4335 West 4100 South in West Valley City. There will be a viewing from 9:00 - 10:45 AM followed by the service beginning at 11:00 AM. Internment at Valley View Memorial Park. The service will be live-streamed
