02/27/1934 ~ 02/18/2015
Rulon Kay Newell (RKay), sweetest husband, wonderful father, grandpa, great grandpa and the best friend you could have, passed away unexpectedly on February 18, 2015, at the age of 80, in Yuma, Arizona, during his annual winter getaway.
RKay was born on February 27, 1934, in Elsinore, Utah to Rulon D. And Naomi Andersen Newell. He had two brothers, Dix and Gregg, whom he loved and shared a wonderful childhood with - hunting, fishing, and enjoying the small town life. He married the love of his life, Rosalie Munson, on August 16, 1958, in Marysvale, Utah. They made their home in Salt Lake City. RKay was the proud father of three daughters and one son- Kaylene (Kerry) Torgerson, Tracy (Ken) Hamilton, Kelly Feller and Wade Newell. He had 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
RKay was a wood shop teacher in Granite School District for over 30 years. As Wade says, he was a master "woodchuck" - building anything from wood, always turning it into a beautiful work of art- whether a piece of furniture, a clock, a birdhouse, vases, bowls, cabinets, wooden games - anything and everything - bringing joy to so many through the years.
RKay was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles for 25 years, volunteering time to F.O.E. He spent a lot of time there with dear friends, enjoying horseshoes, dancing and good people.
RKay and Rose loved spending time with their family - taking them camping, trips to Yellowstone, Fishlake, Gooseberry, Current Creek, the Desert, and anywhere we could build a campfire, fish, and enjoy the outdoors.
RKay enjoyed gardening and bottling. He was proud of everything he could grow. He loved sitting on his back patio, Dutch oven, backyard horseshoes with family and friends. He enjoyed traveling and road trips and had so many good times and good memories with so many dear friends. He made the most of life, enjoying the simple things, he knew what really mattered and tried to instill that in all his relationships, whether family or friend.
A special and sincere thank you to Sherry Lewis for being such a sweet friend and companion for dad these past few years. Preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and brother Gregg, and two grandsons. We are joyous in knowing that dad can be with mom again, who he has truly missed every day since her passing.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley, Utah.
