Neil Kenneth Nixon passed away peacefully December 22, 2023, in Taylorsville, Utah. Neil was a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Theresa Boaz; their four children: Anne Batt (Michael), Donna Sayer (Marshall), Darren Nixon (Melody), Bret Nixon (Stephanie); and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Blaine Thomas Nixon (Marilyn), and Evelyn Orchard Gardner. Neil is preceded in death by his father, Clarence; mother, Lora; brothers, Floyd, Clyde, and Bert; and sisters, Rhea Lou and Dorothy.
Neil was born in Heber City, Utah, the youngest of eight children, on April 18, 1943, to Clarence George Nixon and Lora B Wootton Nixon. From the age of one, he grew up in the rural Hunter area of the Salt Lake Valley. He attended Whittier Elementary, Brockbank Junior High and Cyprus High School. He served an LDS mission to the East Central States Mission, serving in Kentucky and Tennessee. He graduated from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Utah and maintained his license to practice pharmacy throughout his working years. Following his graduation from pharmacy school, he attended and graduated from Northwestern University Dental School in Chicago, Illinois in 1972. Neil served over three years in the U.S. Army Dental Corps at Fort Riley, Kansas. Upon leaving the service, he returned to his home area of Hunter, which is now West Valley City, and practiced dentistry for almost thirty years.
Neil met his sweetheart and future wife while attending dental school in Chicago. There he baptized Theresa into the LDS church. They were married on December 29, 1971, in Potomac, Maryland, and were sealed a year later in the Salt Lake Temple. They became the parents of four wonderful children.
Neil was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and over the years held many leadership positions, including high councilor and bishop, as well as many callings working with youth and scouting. He and Theresa served a full-time mission in the Washington D.C. South Mission (2006-2007), and a service mission at the LDS Employment Resource Center. He felt most blessed to be able to serve in the Jordan River Temple, which he did for many years.
Neil was active in the Utah Dental Association, the Salt Lake District Dental Society where he served as a member of the board, maintained membership in the Utah Pharmaceutical Association, and served a five-year term with the Salt Lake City / County Board of Health. He also served in various district and ward scouting positions. He took joy in working with the youth. Dr. Nixon always enjoyed good humor and taking good care of his dental patients.
Neil had a great love of learning and education, especially in the area of the sciences. He will be lovingly remembered for his sense of humor and his fun-loving spirit. He had a great love for his family and enjoyed taking them on a big vacation every summer. He was a faithful and dedicated servant of the Lord, always striving to do his duty and serve others the best he could.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on December 30, 2023, at the LDS Chapel located at 3315 W. 5620 South, Taylorsville, Utah 84129. A viewing will be held there from 6-8 pm on Friday, December 29th, as well as from 10-10:45 am before the funeral service on December 30th. A luncheon for family will be provided at the church after the interment services.
