Orlando learned the art of welding as a young man at the Central Santa Catalina Sugar Mill in Cruses, Las Villas Cuba, the same place he met his future wife.
He perfected his craft for over 50 years, from the sugar mill in Cuba to shipyards and boiler rooms in New York City, to the Atlantic Sugar Mill in Belle Glade, Florida and, finally, Florida Power & Light in Port Everglades where he worked until his retirement.
Among his many accomplishments over his career was his work on the infamous ocean liner, Stockholm, that struck the Andrea Doria off the coast of Nantucket in 1956. After one of the largest rescue operations in maritime history, the Stockholm was brought into port in New York where Orlando helped repair it.

Orlando was an adventurer and was fortunate to travel in his life. But no matter how far he roamed, he had a special place in his heart for his beloved Florida Keys.
A true and loyal friend to many, Orlando’s personality was larger than life. He was generous, warm, the life of every party and he always had a really great story to tell. His smile was unforgettable, his energy had no limits, his hugs were strong and his love for all was sincere.
He is survived by his beautiful wife of 63 years, Sarah and three children: Orlando (Linda) Alvarez, Arleen (Jeff) Eutin and Nancy (Chris) Miller.
He was an adoring Abuelo/Papi/ Grandpa to 8 grandchildren- Genie Alvarez, Jamie Alvarez, Alexie Ramos, Joey Alvarez, Alyssa (Tyler) Sharpe, Sebastian Alvarez, Benjamin Miller and Julia Miller. He was a wonderful Papi to three great grandchildren - Lucas Mogollon, Alyvia Sharpe, and Alesia Sharpe.
Each of them will keep his legacy and beautiful spirit alive.
Every month, for more than 30 years, Orlando and Sarah sent a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
If you wish to make a contribution in his honor, we know he would appreciate it.
