Laura Johnson Karkula Shepherd (Violet Johnson) passed away from natural causes May 11, 2022, surrounded by family in the comfort of her home. She was 98. Laura was born August 30, 1923, in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Gustav and Emma (Mauch) Johnson. She later made her home in New York, living in Manhattan, Long Island, and Tuxedo Park before settling in Palm Beach, Florida in 1970.
After raising 7 children, Laura pursued her love of travel, spending several months a year canvassing the outer reaches of every continent. She was an 'explorer' rather than a ‘tourist’ and became a student of the world’s histories, cultures, and religions. Her experiences and in-depth knowledge led her to become an invited lecturer and tour guide for several international travel companies. Laura had a passion for the performing arts and participated both as a spectator and an actress, with leading roles in several local and regional stage productions. One of her most rewarding performances was her volunteer work with Kids On the Block, a troupe of puppeteers teaching Palm Beach County children about disabilities, diversity, and inclusion. Laura's never-ending curiosity, thirst for knowledge, and ageless spirit were an inspiration and admired by all who knew her.
Laura is predeceased by her brother, Vernon Johnson, and her companion of 30+ years, Irving Rikon. She leaves behind 7 children: Stephen Karkula, Diana Jones, Jeffrey Karkula (Sally), Petra Karkula, Judy Lahmers (Gary), Laura Shepherd, and Tom Shepherd, as well as 11 grandchildren,18 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren
