John James Doherty, born in Philadelphia, PA, on October 31, 1943, was one of six siblings. He graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School before attending St. Joseph’s College. In 1964, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and proudly served two years at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Before his service, John was a talented professional golfer and won the PGA Amateur Competition in Phoenix, AZ.
John was married to his beloved wife, Norma “Tracy” Doherty, for 58 years. Together, they built a life filled with love and adventure, living up and down the East Coast before settling in Wellington, FL, 31 years ago. Their shared passions included traveling, playing golf, and cherishing each other’s company.
Throughout his career in sales and marketing, John worked with three start-up companies, including international assignments in France and England. His professional journey was defined by his dedication and ambition.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Doherty, and two sisters, Kathleen Frunzi and Helen Doherty. He is survived by his loving wife, Norma “Tracy” Doherty, her son James Rugeley (Dawn), whom John raised as his own, and his siblings: Frances Doherty, James Doherty, and Michael Doherty. He also leaves behind his two cherished grandchildren, Taylor Rugeley and Nicole Bliss, and his great-grandchild, Riley Rugeley.
A dedicated member of Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church for the past 30 years and also very active with St. Vincent DePaul. John became a member of the Knights of Columbus in April 2021. He and Tracy spent 18 years volunteering at the VA, where they found joy in serving others.
A funeral service will be held at Our Lady Queen of Apostles, 100 Crestwood Blvd S, Royal Palm Beach, FL, on Wednesday, December 11, at 9:00 a.m. A burial service will follow at the South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 FL-7, Wellington, FL, at 11:00 a.m. A Memorial Service will also be held on Sunday, January 5th, at 11 am at the VA Chapel located at 7305 North Military Trail, West Palm Beach, FL 33410.
