Audrey Cunningham Koinig died on January 11, 2022, peacefully at home in Estero, Florida. She is survived by her husband Edward and her children Katharine Martin (Will) of Poolesville, MD, Paul Koinig (Kathy) of Crossville, TN, and Kris Campbell (Dick) of Montgomery Village, MD, and grandchildren Will, Katie, Christopher, SaraJane, Ross, Katherine and Colton, and great grandmother to Aubrey.
Audrey grew up in Wheaton, Maryland, and attended Rosarian Academy Catholic School in West Palm Beach Florida. Audrey’s summers were spent swimming at Congressional Country Club where she excelled in 25, and 50-yard sprint freestyle racing. She went on to compete in the Junior Olympics where she won numerous metals for her swimming achievements.
Audrey met her beloved husband, Ed in 1952 and they soon married in November of 1957; beginning their life together by having their three children, Kathy, Paul and Kris. They shared their first home together in Lantana, Florida where they lived until 1970. While living in Florida, Audrey was a member of theLant Junior Women’s Club where she was an active member.
In 1970, the family then moved to Montgomery Village, MD where they were one of the original residents of a newly planned community. While raising her children, Audrey worked for National Geographic in Darnestown, MD for 18 years. While their kids were attending Gaithersburg High School, Audrey became involved with fundraising and participating in the booster club to help provide uniforms and much needed sports equipment to the students.
Audrey loved sports. If she wasn’t swimming, she was teaching others to swim. She worked as a swim instructor for many years as well as a safety instructor, teaching lifesaving skills to all. She enjoyed watching her children play sports and grow together. She was a softball coach for many years and formed lifelong friendships with the other moms that would also become coaches for their girls.
When she wasn’t in the water or on the field, she loved to garden. She helped the children learn how to cultivate and grow summer vegetables as well as how to make beautiful flowers bloom.
Audrey and Ed retired to Estero, Florida in 1999. Audrey enjoyed a relaxing lifestyle of taking trips, golfing and enjoying the Florida sun and surf with Ed by her side.
Audrey was a beautiful wife, daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be dearly missed, however her memory will always live on.
A funeral mass for Audrey will be held Saturday, January 15, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Juliana Catholic Church, 4500 S. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach, FL 33405. A Committal Service will follow at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery, Royal Palm Beach, FL.
