It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Gerald (Gerry) Arnim Oliver on Tuesday August 4th 2020 at 11.30 am at his home. He was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad on February 13th, 1934. Gerald started playing the steel pan at a very early age and during the years became one of the early founding members of Starland Steel Orchestra in Trinidad. He was also a member of Fonclaire Steel Orchestra and Lee Chong Pan Glow. Gerald was the President of the Southern Steel Band movement in Trinidad and gladly shared his musical gift and love for the steel pan with as many as he can. He eventually committed himself and his talent to Mon Repos R.C. and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic churches in Trinidad. He travelled to Wales and Canada with the World Council of Churches to play the steel pan. Apart from music, he was a skilled soccer player in his youth and won a number of awards for his athletic abilities.
He migrated to Canada in 1996 and eventually became a member of the Knights of Columbus Scarborough Council. Gerald served and played the steel pan at St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Church where he was loved and well known. He will be greatly missed.
