Mom's Cancer.

In Dec 1992 mom had major cancer surgery for bladder cancer. Among other things they converted part of her bowel into an "Indiana Pouch". When mom had to drain the pouch we referred to "she's doing her plumbing". She often said she was grateful for that surgery as it let her meet all of her grandchildren. 

In 2015 she had to have another surgery  for the "Indiana Pouch" to be converted into a stoma as the catheter had failed & made a false passage. "I am VERY UNIQUE" she would tell that her Dr. Klotz would say. 

She had many infections after that initial surgery until she started to take Essiac. "I don't have any more infections" she said to a dr once who replied "yes, & the cancer hasn't come back either!" She found that comment very interesting.  She continued the Essiac for the majority of her life because of it & she had very few colds or flu.

Mom's memories of Uncles and the War.

Mom would often talk about when her uncles came back from the war. How Momsy (Rosalie Gunn) put her hair in heat rollers for curls, the heat made her feel ill, how they went down to the C.N.E. Coliseum with her Aunt Phillis, up in the stands watching as they all marched in, how the second the word "DISMISSED" was spoken Aunt Phillis disappeared in the crowd to find Uncle Walt! (We would often get teary at this point of the story. She remembered the feelings so vividly.)  Mom often spoke of that memory as well as many others about her Field family uncles in and after the war. What military regiment they were with, injuries, a thankful save onto a passing tank...  We tried to document for family tree, often her voice cracking & a few tearful memories.







Evelyn was a gutsy lady. She raised two beautiful daughters through difficult circumstances, overcame a life-threatening health challenge, and managed to buy and pay for her own home as a single mother. She loved her family, children, grandchildren, pets, and her yard and her flowers, of which there were many. She welcomed me into her family without reservation, for which I will be forever grateful. She was my mother-in-law and my friend. I will miss her.

Mom's Garden. 

When we moved to the house with multiple evergreen, established bushes at front, side & back, a very old purple sand cherry & lilacs (reminding her of childhood) at the side window she loved, dogwood & more there was also a very large garden plot edged out, a good 1/4 of that lawn space. It had a few onion, an established row of rhubarb edging the middle by the lawn running parallel to the driveway. Mom said that she "was never a gardener." Yet every year she grew tomato (many, multiple types), cucumbers "because they'll grow" not because she liked them, she kept the rhubarb & many other plants. She'd grow to share with her neighbours, to add to baked goods with raspberries she planted in the front lawn that reminded her of her grandparents. She added many flowers & rose bushes around the property including a bed of wildflowers by the road too narrow to mow, baskets & hanging flower bags along the fence, milkweed for the butterfly.... A beautiful, giving garden for someone self described as "not a gardener".

She also liked to give a "Survival Kit". A penny to not be broke, an eraser to help mistakes disappear, a marble in case someone thinks you lost yours, a rubber band to stretch your limits, a piece of string to tie things together if they fall apart, a chocolate kiss to remind you someone loves you.  She gave these to show love & she enjoyed the smiles it gave. ❤️

I remember many fun memories with grandma. Some include Christmas when she stayed awake late at night watching Die Hard as a Christmas movie, her coming to Ottawa to visit, Gunn day activities like the drives up to Keswick or to Uncle Dan/Mary Lou's cottage. In this photo we were enjoying Teasea wearing a Sens shirt to tease the cousins.

D and I enjoyed helping Grandma with the yard work and making faces in the window to make Grandma laugh. Glad we could be her "Weed Warriors". 

I’m missing you mom! These and so so much more! The need to talk with you! 
Today your phone is being disconnected. THAT was OUR big connection for over 20 years! What a connection it was!  ❤️  I miss it with you every single day! All the things I feel that I am building up to tell you I feel like I’m about to BURST! 
It has been a month and a half since you are gone. 
It’s like yesterday and a lifetime! I love you! XO


Oh Evelyn, Words can't even describe how much you will be missed not only by family, But friends who consider you family - including myself. We may have been neighbors but you were more family than a neighbor. The day we moved in you welcomed us with arms wide open, You told me if I ever needed anything at all you were always there - you held true to your word, You were ALWAYS there for me. You helped me with my gardening tricks, helped me learn new health habits and taught me to be more positive about the world we live in. Christmas will never feel the same without home baked treats and scrubbies from you. Today I won't be sad for a loss, But grateful for such an amazing experience from an amazing person who has taught me so much. I hope you rest well Evelyn - And may our souls meet again. All the Love. 

I met Evelyn in1998 when we moved in next door she welcomed us with open arms. She was my support when my mom passed away. Whenever I was sick or hurt she would make me a bag of  tea biscuit. She was like a mom to me I even called her Mom Gunn. I will miss all the talks and things she did for me. She was amazing and will be missed greatly. Rest in peace Mom Gunn 
















I enjoyed our many conversations on the phone over the years.  I will miss them and her.  She was such a wonderful friend.

My friend Evelyn and I first came together both as neighbours and dog and cat lovers.  I became a junior senior, now 71, to her senior senior.  I benefited from her advice and training in the art of maximizing the rewards to be gained from points and discounts.  Her experience and shrewd business sense were so evident and I had a great education at her hands.  I also received other gifts from her hands, her creations that were carefully and elegantly crafted whether they were for cats or people.  The pandemic intruded, leaving no one untouched.  We did not see each other much in recent times and I am sorry for that.  I miss her great character and wish her family comfort gained from each other and great memories of her.










When my own husband passed away, Aunt Evelyn was the first person to call me and offer her support.

Art and I want to extend our heartfelt condolences to you and your family.   Although our family gatherings became less frequent over the passing years, we hold fond memories of  Evelyn and the Gunn family who were always full of joy at these gatherings.   We are sorry for your loss and know she will be missed.  Our thoughts are with you,  Art and Karin Field

Evelyn’s t-shirt “I survived Hurricane Bob” was a souvenir of her 1991 New England camping vacation with Ted. When they heard the warnings that a category 2 hurricane was approaching, Ted thought they’d be fine in a tent (!!). Fortunately at Evelyn’s insistence they moved to a motel before Bob made landfall. Evelyn’s account of their trip had us all in stitches. She had a wonderful sense of humour (and was a great sport). Ted adored Evelyn. He always spoke with admiration of her business acumen, work ethic and artistic abilities, and most of all her devotion to her family. Evelyn, you will be missed. Xoxo

Evelyn was a very kind, special lady. We became friends through her dog TeaSea, as I am her groomer.  Evelyn woudl visit and bring some of her handmade bandanas, and beautifully knitted necklaces. I loved hearing her stories about her life and family.  She will be remembered fondly by so many❤️















Evelyn was such a lovely woman. Many memories through the years and always remember her love for animals! Rosalie's engagement party was such a wonderful day Evelyn was so proud of all her family and really enjoyed the day. So thankful for that great memory! So sorry for your loss she will be missed.

I will miss our daily phone calls. Taking you to craft shows and looking for that perfect item to do those crafts. I will miss the look of glee on your face when you conquered a new craft. Love you and miss you. ❤ 

So sorry for your loss Melanie. I still remember a bag of “cow seeds” that your Mom made for me. I had them for the longest time… I suspect that my kids eventually found them and tried planting them. 🤣 She was a lovely person and so proud of you. Thinking of you and your family at this difficult time.

Evelyn was a force to be reckoned with in the most wonderful way.  She was bright, competent, capable and witty.   Our fond memories begin in 1989.   Kathleen, Richard and Evelyn began working about the same time for the Federal Government.   Delightfully our friendships grew from there.  When we decided to marry, Evelyn was most helpful with sewing ideas for Kathleen’s wedding gown and insisted Kathleen should also make a veil.  She was right.  Evelyn and Ted attended our wedding and videod it.  Wonderful memory on all levels.   Evelyn had so many talents, gifts as well as warmth and generosity.  Animals loved her and she gave them the best home.  She enjoyed  talking about her family: children, grandchildren, their spouses and friends.  She always looked forward to the Gunn reunions in Bala.  Our hearts go out to her family at this sad time.

We have many memories of Evelyn spanning the decades.  She was always a part of Peter and Mel's lives, from studying to family to ... well, you get the picture.  She loved to be with them and reveled in life.  So I am including a couple of photos of years gone by with Paul, Lynne, Shaun and Andrew.  

You will be missed Evelyn but we will remember and cherish the  good times (of which their were MANY!).

Saw her obituary on the Northern Secondary FB page.  Long before I attended, but your writing of her struck a cord with me.  I am so much like her she seemed like a very strong woman and loved wildlife just like me.  I am very sorry for your loss and may she rest in peace.

The CNE, the craft shows, and all the experiences we had together and even introducing my days of our lives addiction. She was feisty and always willing to put up a fight for you,  even in her last few months.  I am so thankful she got to see me get married, and got know my Husband (Connor). She told me she wasn't as lucky with love but, she was lucky with her girls, so when I have children, I will be even luckier cause I hit the jackpot. I will miss you grandma.









Beside the words greatest neighbour in the dictionary , there should be a picture of our dear friend Evelyn. From the first day we moved in and her bringing home made cookies over for us and our hungry helpers to all the times she shared the spare key to our house for Jessica when she lost hers, she was always there for us with a smile. 

Friends would check on our gardens when we were away and reports of a lady asking what they were doing in our yard were regular. 
Evelyn will be sadly missed as a friend and a great neighbour.
