July 11, 1940 - September 29, 2021
Claudine was born in Toronto and raised in Scarborough. She was an educator with the former Scarborough Board of Education from 1959 to 1994 and enjoyed all of her years as a teacher, consultant, and vice-principal, but was especially happy when she was teaching Media Literacy or Native Studies.
She was the beloved daughter of Hungarian immigrants Victor and Theresa (nee Piroska) de Vietoris. Her loving husband Steve (born Istvan) Goller predeceased her on July 9, 2018 after more than 55 years of marriage. Claudine and Steve adopted siblings Rudy and Grace, born Savoyard, in 1974. Rudy died in 1990. Grace has three children (James, Vanessa, and Brendan Davies) and five grandchildren.
Claudine’s brother Cornelius (Vic) predeceased her, but his former wife Joan James and their sons Brian and Paul James and their families, as well as his second family, Rick and Lori, will remember her with fondness.
She also leaves (in Hungary) Steve’s family, especially his niece Erzso and her husband Zoli and their family, and other relatives in Hungary and the U.S.A, as well as friends in other parts of the world, including her “sisters” in the Omicron (and former Xi) chapter of Beta State, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Her best friend and bridesmaid Linda Painter was always supportive of everything she did and Claudine was grateful to her for her friendship.
Claudine was a published author and was a prolific writer of Letters to the Editor. She cared about many things and was always willing to express her opinions and concerns. She was unhappy about the general decline in the quality of written and spoken language in Canada and she felt that people involved with radio and television as well as teachers should try to express themselves correctly out of respect for their audiences.
Claudine was very involved with St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Scarborough, and with the foundation and club she established in Hungary to help people who suffered strokes and/or aphasia.
Visitation will be at the Giffen-Mack Funeral Home, 4115 Lawrence Avenue East, Scarborough, ON M1E 2S2 on Wednesday, October 6 from 4 to 8 p.m.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, 2232 Ellesmere Road, Scarborough (one block east of Markham Road at Dormington Drive). The burial will follow in the Vietoris family plot in Mount Hope Cemetery, 305 Erskine Avenue, Toronto.
In lieu of flowers, Claudine requested memorial donations be made to the Right to Life Association of Toronto and Area, 2238 Dundas Street West, P.O. Box 59016, Toronto, ON M6R 3B5 or Covenant House, 20 Gerrard Street East, Toronto, ON M5B 2P3. She also asked for prayers.
