Virgil Dean Burgan, 90, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at the VA Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at First Church of God, 4201 E. Douglas, in Des Moines. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Virgil was born August 6, 1931 in Madison County, IA to Ralph and Mina (Thurman) Burgan. He graduated from Lorimor High School and then enlisted in U.S. Marine Corps, serving during Korea. Virgil farmed in Madison County in his early days before moving to Des Moines. He worked at Goodyear and Sealy mattress before going to Pomerantz Diversified where he worked for many years until his retirement in 2000. Virgil served as an elder, a board member, was on the council, and volunteered at the many events at his church, the First Church of God. Virgil enjoyed traveling, visiting family, reading Amish fiction and playing with his dog, Ginger. He loved John Deere and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
Virgil is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mary; sons, Michael, Myles (Mary), Myron, and Mylan; daughters, Valarie and Valora (Roger); stepsons, Mark and Joe (Tina); stepdaughter, Kim; 19 grandchildren; and many great and great-great grandchildren.
