Raymond Joe Murillo, age 83, of West Des Moines, Iowa passed away on Friday, September 29, 2023, at University Park in Des Moines. Services for Raymond will be held on Friday, October 13, 2023, at McLaren's Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines. A visitation will start at 11 a.m. followed by a service at noon, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
Ray was born on August 31, 1940, in Des Moines to Miguel and Lupe (Vasquez) Murillo. His fondest childhood memory was eating his mother’s home-cooked meals. He served in the US Army and graduated from Valley High School. Following his honorable discharge, Ray worked for Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel and Iowa Power and Light Company. He lived in Valley Junction all his life. His hobbies included listening to country and Western music, casinos, tinkering with and fixing things, and finding deals at auctions and garage sales.
He is survived by his daughter, Regina (Don) Shafer of West Des Moines; sons; Daniel of West Des Moines and Randy (Alicia) of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Blake and Justin Shafer of West Des Moines; and
great-grandchildren, Edwin, Parker, Andrew and Kelsey Shafer.
Preceded in death by his wife Ruth (DeShong) Murillo and his siblings, Everett, Mary and Miguel Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages Memorial contributions to the Polk County West Side Community Center of West Des Moines or Suncrest Home Health and Hospice of Des Moines.
