Martin Richard Curley, 85, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. According to his wishes, he has been cremated and a memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2017 at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in West Des Moines with a gathering immediately following the service at the church. Burial of his cremated remains will be at St. Timothy’s Columbarium.
Marty was born July 9, 1932 in St. Louis, MO to Thomas and Elizabeth Curley. He grew up in St. Louis and graduated both high school and college from St. Louis University. Marty served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1957 during the Korean War. His career in sales and marketing was primarily focused on commercial paper and sanitary supplies. After working in that area for several years he was transferred to Des Moines in 1986. In 1987, Marty met and married the love of his life, Susan Ann DeVrieze. Sue had one daughter, Mary and Marty had two children from his previous marriage to Shirley King, Marty Jr. and daughter, Carolyn.
Marty was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan who watched all their games. He truly enjoyed his dog, Buttons and parakeet, Charlie. Marty liked to read and watch T.V. to stay up to date on current affairs. He was a member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church and the American Legion Post 620 in West Des Moines.
Marty is survived by his wife, Susan; son, Martin Jr. (Julie); daughters, Carolyn (Brian) MacCaull and Mary (Tom) Hall; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Thomas. He will be greatly missed by his extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Timothy’s or Animal Lifeline of Iowa.
