Loyd Elmer Payne, 89, of Des Moines, IA, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2024. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 8, 2024 at 10 AM at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel, with a committal service to follow.
Elmer was born on June 10, 1935 to Daniel and Margueritte Payne, in Palisade, Minnesota. When he was younger, his family moved to Des Moines, Iowa.
He attended Des Moines Lincoln from 7th grade through 9th grade. In 7th grade, he met the love of his life, Elaine. They were married in 1954 and had 45 wonderful years together. He attended Des Moines Technical High School, where he would graduate in 1953.
He enlisted in the lowa Army National Guard when he was 17, and he was a full-time Guardsman for 28 years, until he was injured on the job and forced to retire. He was a member of the 34th Infantry Red Bull Division, 3655th Ordnance Corps.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine, in 1999; his parents; and his sisters, Deloris and Jeannette.
As the patriarch of the family, he is survived by his son Daniel, (Debbie); grandson, Erik; Daughter Margueritte Lemke (Joe), and numerous beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
