James "Jim" Schmid, devoted husband, loving father, and loyal friend, passed peacefully into the arms of our Lord and Savior on February 23, 2021, at the age of 80. Our loss is heaven’s gain of a remarkable high school Math and Computer Science teacher, as well as football and baseball coach, that impacted so many lives for the better over his 37 years in the classroom and on the fields of play culminating with his induction into the Illinois High School Coaches Hall of Fame.
Jim was born on April 28, 1940, to George and Mildred Schmid in Austin, MN. Besides Kathy, his wife of 51 years, he leaves behind a sister, Lois Schmieder of Austin, MN and three brothers: Al Schmid of Peoria, IL; William (Mary) Schmid of Elk Run Heights, IA; and Tony (Ann) Schmid of Warrens, WI, along with several nieces and nephews. Also, two sisters-in-law: Mary Vincer and Betty Bouma, both of Rockford, IL.
Jim was most proud of his children and their spouses: Chris (Brian) Terhark of Clive, IA; Joe (Sarah) Schmid of Pittsburgh, PA; and Sue (Charlie) Furst of Elmhurst, IL; along with his grandchildren: Emily and Grace Terhark; Kate and Julia Schmid; and Conrad Furst.
After completing 12 years of Catholic education, Jim earned a B.A. from Loras College in Dubuque, IA and a master’s degree from Northwestern University.
Jim’s was a life well lived and his spirit will carry on in all of those who were inspired by his example of service and loving grace. Examples of his service included the school board at Riley Elementary; the Sacred Heart Church Parish Council, Finance Committee, and Knights of Columbus; and helping friends and community members in any way he could.
