Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Wasker, 91, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018 at Santa Marta in Olathe, Kansas. She passed away peacefully, in the company of her daughter, Cindy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with a private family burial at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
Betty was born December 30, 1926 in Melcher, Iowa, the 13th child of John and Mary Bubon. She graduated from Melcher-Dallas High School, where she led her basketball team to their first state championship. Betty worked as a secretary when the Iowa Legislature was in session, first in the House of Representatives and then in the Senate.
Betty was a life-long athlete and was an active and accomplished bowler, tennis player and golfer. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her closest friends. When alone, she was a voracious reader and completer of the toughest crossword puzzles. She was loyal to a fault to her Chicago “Cubbies.” Most of all, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and most recently, great-grandmother to three. Her kids want you to know that she was ALWAYS fully present, whenever needed by them, both as children and as adults. Best. Mom. Ever.
Betty is survived by, deeply loved by, and profoundly missed by her children, Cindy (Ron) Zitterkopf, Chuck (Gina) Wasker, Jr., Lisa (Jerry) Stevenson; grandchildren, Lara (Joe) Sciara, Kate (Evan) Salmela, Max (Haley) Wasker, Laura Wasker, Jeremiah (Taylor) Stevenson, and Samantha Stevenson; great-grandchildren, Adalina Grace Sciara, Isabelle Marie Salmela and Ellis Glenn Wasker; and many nieces, nephews and loyal friends. She was preceded in death by her siblings, as well as her husband, Charles, in December 2016, after 67 years of marriage.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
