Edward Franklin Schreck was born May 31, 1937, in Davenport, Iowa and raised on a farm outside of Chariton by parents John and Della Schreck. As an only child, Ed lived the typical Iowa farm life spending his days doing chores, swimming and fishing in the pond; all with his dog Fanny by his side. As a teenager, Ed saved his money baling hay and picking up bottles. He bought his first motorcycle, an Indian, which began his lifelong love of motorcycles and traveling the open road.
Ed enlisted in the Army initially and transferred to the Navy, serving three tours in Viet Nam as a Seabee. In between leaving the Army and enlisting in the Navy, he courted and married Judy Stout on December 23, 1959.
In between tours, the family grew starting with Mike, then Jeff, Teresa and Brian. They lived in several military towns including Newport News, Virginia, Port Hueneme, California and Gulf Port, Mississippi. Upon military retirement Ed and Judy moved their family to Ames, Iowa for several years. They then moved to Arkansas where they have lived the past 40 years.
In Arkansas Ed and Judy were able to ride their motorcycles all year round and were involved with several motorcycle and riding clubs. Whether in a group or on their own, they traveled to every lower 48 state, annually meeting up with Ed's Seabee unit. Ed had a variety of interests including Ham and CB radios, calligraphy, and as a self-taught guitarist, played in a few bands in the military.
Ed was always a patriot who loved our country and the military. For many years he and Judy volunteered with the local Patriot Guard in Rogers/Bentonville. They felt honoring our military was of great importance and dutifully showed up when needed for a funeral.
Up until this past year, Ed lived a full and active life. Never meeting a stranger, young or old, Ed will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife Judy; sons Mike (Carolyn) Schreck and Jeff (Chris) Schreck; daughter Teresa (Rick) Pate and son Brian Schreck; granddaughters Kristin (JR) Singley and Erica (Taylor) Darr; and great-grandsons Jason, Rex and Duke.
