Dennis Grant Moore, 74, died on December 14, 2024 of cancer. He was born on September 10, 1950. His teaching career spanned forty years in the West Des Moines Community School District and ten years at Des Moines Area Community College. Dennis was also a tutor with AmeriCorps in the Des Moines Public Schools, a test proctor at Des Moines University, a guest services employee at Drake University events, and a guest services employee at the Iowa Events Center.
Dennis earned his B.A. degree in English from Simpson College and his M.A. in English Education from Truman State University. For his 70th birthday, Dennis and family installed a bench on the Simpson College campus near a sugar maple tree that he had planted a few years earlier in grateful appreciation for Simpson College. He was the recipient of the 2024 Simpson College Alumni Loyalty Award. Dennis credits Simpson College as the genesis of his fifty-year teaching career.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; a son, David, of Council Bluffs, IA; a daughter, Emily (Parker) Brown, and their dog, Finn, of Brooklyn Park, MN; a brother, Dan Alan (Mary Kay) Moore, of Sioux City; three nieces: Mindi (Jason) Rojas and their son, Ricky, of Tallahassee, FL; Michelle (Andy) Devitt and their son, James, of Maplewood, MN; and Megan (Josh) Pennell and their sons, Isaiah, Jack, and Billy, of Sioux City; and a nephew, Eric (Jenny) Moore and their son, Ethan, and daughter, Sophia, of Sioux City.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lorraine Moore, from Albia, Iowa, and later from West Des Moines. Dennis is a donor to the Iowa Donor Network.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Central Presbyterian Church, 3829 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, at 11 a.m. Friday, December 20, 2024. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A reception will follow the service in Fellowship Hall upstairs.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Central Presbyterian Church Music Department, 3829 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312 or to Simpson College, 701 North C Street, Indianola, IA 50125 for the established Dennis G. Moore endowed student scholarship or to Lutheran Lakeside Camp, 2491 170th Street, Spirit Lake, IA 51360 for providing other campers the same enjoyment that Dennis experienced as a camper during the summer of 1964.
