Funeral services will be held at West Des Moines Christian Church on Monday, October 23, 2017 at 10:30 a.m.
David was born October 18, 1959 in Perry, Iowa to Dean and Nancy (Robison) Keenan. He graduated from North Polk High School in 1978 and earned his bachelor’s degree from William Penn University in 2014. In 1981, he began his 26-year career at the Des Moines Fire Department. During this time, he also served as Flight Paramedic for Life Flight, as a nurse in the emergency department at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, and as Investigator for the Polk County Medical Examiner. He retired from the Des Moines Fire Department with rank of District Chief of EMS in 2007. Until his death, he worked as the Emergency Department Nurse Manager for Unity Point Health at Methodist West Hospital in West Des Moines. David always found meaning and fulfillment in helping people when they were experiencing their worst. He had a passion for mentorship and was incredibly proud of his staff at Methodist West.
He and his wife, Aimee, were married on April 14, 2001 and they lived in Clive, Iowa. His joys included being outdoors, riding his motorcycle, and grabbing a Mountain Dew with a friend. Above all else, he found comfort and happiness in being at home with his family and his beloved German Shepherd, Rüger.
David is survived by his wife, Aimée Keenan (Clive); daughters, Alexandra Keenan (New York City) and Quincey Keenan (Clive); sons, Logan (Annie) Keenan (Windsor Heights) and Quade Keenan (Clive); mother, Nancy Keenan (Grimes); sister, Cindy (Rick) Oberembt (Dallas Center); brother, Mike Keenan (Indianola); nephews, Matt (Nicole) Oberembt, Chris (Kati) Oberembt, Justin Keenan, and Ryan Clement; nieces, Jessica Keenan, Jerica Keenan, and Megan Clement; five great-nieces, and one great-nephew. He is also survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gene and Mary Clement, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Chris and Lisa Clement. He is preceded in death by his father, Dean Keenan.
The family would like to give special thanks to the Clive Police and Fire Departments whose response, care, and compassion during a difficult time were very much appreciated.
Memorials may be directed to the family and will be placed in an education fund for his youngest children, as learning and education were priorities for David.
