Raquel Torres Garza, aged 94, a long-time resident of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2024. Born to Juan and Lorenza Garza on January 14, 1930, in Mercedes, Texas, Raquel's life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and community.
Raquel embarked on a fulfilling career as a Medical Technologist, where she devoted over four decades to the healthcare industry. Her professional journey saw her serve with compassion at Weslaco Clinical Pathology Laboratory, as well as McAllen and Edinburg Medical Centers, where she touched countless lives.
In 1951, Raquel married Benito Cardona at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and their union blossomed with three children: Irene Cardona Hrovat, married to Mirko Hrovat; David Cardona, married to Norma Hinojosa Cardona, and Diana Cardona.
Raquel's legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren: Karl and his wife Akiko, John, Mike, Alan, David Jr. and his wife Kristen, Matthew and his wife Jeannie, Judith and her husband Brandon, Elizabeth and her husband Aaron, her fifteen great-grandchildren, and her sister in-laws, Ninfa Cano and Felipa Castro.
A devout member of the Catholic Daughters at St. Joseph’s Church in Edinburg, Raquel also dedicated many hours volunteering at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, embodying the spirit of service.
Raquel now reunites with her beloved parents, Juan and Lorenza, and her brothers, Eddie and Juan Garza, who preceded her in passing.
The family invites you to join them in honoring Raquel's memory. A viewing and rosary will be held at Funeraria del Angel Highland Funeral Home in Weslaco on April 4th. A service celebrating her life will follow at St. Pius X Catholic Church on April 5th.
Serving as pallbearers are; David Cardona, Jr, Matthew Cardona, John Hrovat, Karl Hrovat, Mike Hrovat,
Mirko Hrovat, Brandon Merritt, Aaron Powell.
A visitation for Raquel will be held Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM at Funeraria del Angel Highland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 6705 North Fm 88, Weslaco, Texas 78596. A rosary will occur Thursday, April 4, 2024 at 6:00 PM. A funeral mass will occur Friday, April 5, 2024 at 10:00 AM. A burial will occur Friday, April 5, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Highland Memorial Park, 6705 North Fm 88, Weslaco, Texas 78596.
