As a young man, he served in the U.S. Army and did a tour of duty in Korea during the Korean War where he saw action. Upon returning, he married the love of his life, Guadalupe, with whom he remained a dutiful husband and father to his sons.
Until he retired, José worked in gas stations and for gas station companies around the Valley and south Texas. He loved having notable family festivities at home with his family, his extended family, friends, and neighbors. He loved listening to conjunto music and always had a love for his home pets, mainly his dogs, of which he had many during his lifetime. He had a marvelous sense of dry humor, typical of a Valley man, and could make anyone laugh all the time. To the very end, he never lost his sense of humor, though he could also be quite serious about the world around him. But his good sense of humor remained most prominent. He was always clear-headed, hardworking, and balanced in this approach to life. To the end, he was undeniably a Valley man from San Manuel.
He is survived by his sons, Isaac, Jaime, and David.
He is preceded in death by his wife Guadalupe Cortez Mejía as well as his parents Mateo Mejía and Antonia Pompa Mejía. He is also preceded in death by his brothers Gilberto, Benjamin, Leonel, Rosendo, who all served in the Army during W.W. II, and by his sisters Leonora Perez and Carmen Gorena.
He cherished his nieces and nephews, which included, among others, Rudy Gorena, Cindy Romero, Benny Mejía, Roy Mejía, Rolando Mejía, Vilma Sánchez, and his next-door neighbor Saul Moreno and his family. His family is especially thankful to his healthcare provider, Fabiola Garza, who took extraordinarily excellent care of both our mother and especially my father, who grew very close to her this last couple of years. She brought great joy to their lives.
His honorary pallbearers are Rudy Gorena, Rudy Cárdenas, Benny Mejía, Roy Mejía, Rolando Mejía, Arturo Martínez and Saul Moreno.
A visitation for Jose will be held Tuesday, May 24, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Funeraria del Angel Highland, Weslaco, TX 78596. A chapel service will occur Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 10:00 AM, followed by the interment at 11:00 AM at Highland Memorial Park, Weslaco, TX 78596.
