Charles Edward Burdick

Born in Providence, RI, to George Burdick and Marjorie (Reeves) Burdick, he was awarded the Purple Heart for his service as an army paratrooper in the Pacific during WWII. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students League of New York and began selling his paintings at the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit in Greenwich Village. After the first of many travels abroad, he moved his family from NYC to Cape Cod in 1966, where he established his art gallery and was a founder of the Wellfleet Art Gallery Association. He continued to sell his work at outdoor art festivals in New York, New England, Chicago and Florida, winning many awards, including Best in Show at his last festival in 2009. His last of many solo shows were at the Cahoon Museum of American Art in 2007 and at the Wellfleet Library in 2012.

Charlie is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Joanne Maaloe Burdick, adoring children Margaret Burdick, Kate Barnholtz, David Burdick and wife Funi, and loving grandchildren Anna Barnholtz, Ben Burdick and bride Maria Zervos. He leaves behind his beloved sister, Margie Barsamian, and generations of nieces and nephews in RI. He was companion to the late Ollie, and friend to all dogs.

A celebration will be held at a later date when fish stories, animal tales and facts as related by ‘Dr. Charles’ can be shared.
