William Wayne "Bill" Webster, of Mt. Enterprise, TX, peacefully transitioned to his heavenly home on November 17, 2022. Born July 10, 1927, he was 95 years old. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Hazel, who made her transition on September 29, 2022 at age 97. Visitation and graveside service, with military honors, will be held at Forest Park East Funeral Home and Cemetery, Webster, TX, at noon on December 3, 2022.
Bill is survived by son, Ken Webster and daughter-in-law Barbara of Moore, OK; daughter, Floralee Lovell and husband James of Conroe, TX; grandson Paul Brown of Conroe, TX; granddaughter Paula "Suzie" Michaud of Humble, TX; brother, Monte "Tom" Webster and sister-in-law Tomie of Oklahoma City; brother Ralph Webster and sister-in-law Billie of Oklahoma City.
Before finishing high school, Bill enlisted in the Merchant Marines during WWII when merchant ships were favorite targets of German submarines. He began his maritime career in the engine room, studied mechanical engineering and tested/certified progressively upward to retire as Chief Engineer (below-deck Captain) of the Doctor Lykes, flagship and largest container cargo vessel in the Lykes Brothers Steamship Company. After retirement, Bill continued active service to his country as ensign in the United States Naval Reserve, where he was honorably discharged in 1965.
Nearing retirement, Bill fulfilled a self-promise to complete his GED; then purchased over 200 acres of undeveloped East Texas piney woods near Henderson, which he and Hazel pioneered into a registered cattle ranch and homestead.
As Hazel's eyes began irreversible failure, Bill dispersed his herd, sold most of his land, bought a travel home, joined the Good Sam Travel Club and toured the scenic United States and Canada while his wife could still enjoy the sights. As her blindness arrived, they settled in for a quiet life together at home harvesting and canning from their garden and fruit trees. They were members of the Southern Baptist Church.
A visitation for William will be held Saturday, December 3, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Forest Park East Funeral Home, 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, Texas 77598. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at 12:00 PM at Forest Park East Cemetery, 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, Texas 77598.
