Born on May 28,1981, Carl was loved by his family, after all he was the baby. It also didn’t hurt that he was so cute. In fact, he was even cuter when he laughed. When he was about a year old, if you said Kikkoman, the soy sauce brand, in his presence he’d have fits of laughter. As a small child, he was terrified of thunder and lightning. After one big storm his mom, Vi, thought he had vanished in the night and rushed into Brynette’s room in a panic, only to discover she had brought him to sleep with her because he was too scared to leave his own bed during the storm. Another time, the power went out at the house and Carl’s mom set out candles so they could see while eating dinner. Carl loved it so much he demanded they eat by candlelight for almost a whole year, there would be no descension among his followers.
Later, as a student, Carl attended McWhirter Elementary and graduated from Clear Lake High School. As he got older, it became clear that Carl had developed two passions: music and food.He was a member of several bands. His bandmates remember him for his music, but also for what kind of person he was. Here are some comments from his bandmates:
“Carl was one of the best bandmates anyone could have ever hoped for. Never the weak link but the glue that held us together. He was passionate and determined to put in the work! He was very meticulous and would spend hours on his parts until they were perfected. Not only would he show up early to the performances, but he was always willing to lend a helping hand loading or unloading gear. He rarely complained about anything. He would speak up and protected his bandmates like a brother. He would also put you in your place if you got out of line. He was a great leader and role model for other members to follow. I wish I had ten of him!!!!! Besides sharing many stages with him and many hours of grueling band rehearsals he was always a joy to be around. Offstage and beyond the shows he was a friend! He would take the time to listen if needed and to me that's irreplaceable! Carl’s spirit will shine on through the music he helped to create which will last eternally in time!”
In addition to playing music, Carl loved the hospitality industry. Just like he enjoyed the freedom and expression that came from playing different instruments, Carl enjoyed working hard in a wide range of restaurants, working as a server, a bartender, a manager and a chef. He was well known for his vast knowledge and skill with BBQ-especially his brisket! It is remembered as being “one of the best ever seen for sure.” He didn't stop there though, he loved cooking foods with Italian, asian, and cajun influence, at times fusing flavors from around the world to create interesting dishes for friends gathered at his table. Then there were the tacos-tacos were always on the menu wherever he went, that was a must.
Throughout his twenty plus years in the industry, Carl did it all from the front of the house to the back of the house. Honestly, there wasn't an area that he couldn't handle.
