Canton-Cynthia Burress Skidmore, 77 went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 31, 2021, surrounded by her family at her home in Cruso. Cynthia was born in Haywood County on January 21, 1944, to the late Matt Vernon and Maude Kell Burress. She spent her life in service to the Lord, family and others. Cynthia was a current and active member of East Fork Baptist Church. She had also served as a Youth Director at Dutch Cove Baptist Church with OJ. Together they served as Pastor and Wife at Beulah Baptist Church, Meadow Grove Baptist Church, Fairview Baptist Church and Welcome Hill Baptist Church. Cynthia faithfully volunteered with Haywood Regional Medical Center for over 15 years.
In addition to her parents, Cynthia was preceded in death by her husband the Reverend Olie Joe “OJ” Skidmore, Jr.
Cynthia is survived by her daughters, Cyndy Brown (Darryl) and Laura Barton (Kyle); brother, Edward Dee “Buster” Burress (Betty); grandsons Joshua Isaac “Josh” (Renee Ramsey), Zachary Colton “Zac”, Kade Alexander Brown, Seth Daniel and Samuel David Barton; great-grandchildren, Ericka Fierce Lee Reed “Brown” and Allyson Marie Ramsey “Ally Belle”; and many loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 4:00 pm on Saturday, July 31, at East Fork Baptist Church with the Reverend Greg Cullen and the Reverend Mark Tice officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm prior to the service at the church.
