Barbara Joan (Scates) Cullen

Waynesville-Barbara Joan Scates Cullen, 87 went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 6, 2019. Joan was born in Haywood County on March 29, 1932, to the late John T. and Maude Singleton Scates. Joan was a mother who placed her family above everything else. It was not unusual to drive down Elysinia Ave. and see her sitting on the porch, enjoying time with her family. She enjoyed working in her yard and was a woman who found the good in everyone. Joan was a lifelong member of Hazelwood Baptist church where she worked in the children’s department as a secretary and teacher. She retired from Lea Industries where she worked as a highlighter. While she lived a quiet life, she made a great impact on everyone she touched.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, James Michael “Mickey” Cullen; seven sisters and one brother.

Joan is survived by her sons, the Reverend Greg Cullen (Jean) and Mike Cullen (Anita); a daughter, Patricia (Trish) Trull (Benny); grandchildren, Chris Hawkins, Levi Cullen (Rebecca), Samuel Cullen, Bethany Cullen, Luke Cullen (Paula), and Nathan Trull (April); and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, October 10, at Hazelwood Baptist Church with the Reverend Tim Lolley and the Reverend Greg Cullen officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-3 pm prior to the service at the church.
