The husband of Karen “Sue” Rose Rogers, Ray was born in Richwood, W.Va., on Dec. 15, 1942, to the late Ray and Myrtle Hinkle Rogers.
He served in the U.S. Navy before meeting the love of his life in December 1962. They were married on June 11, 1965, and were looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in 2025.
Ray and Sue started their family in Richmond, where Ray operated a construction company. He loved to take his children to the nearby airport to watch the planes, and eventually got his pilot’s license.
He began a long career at Estes Express Lines in Richmond, then transferred in 1980 to Stuarts Draft, where the family settled. He retired from Estes in 2002. After retirement he found great purpose and satisfaction in delivering medical supplies for Home IV Care and Nutritional Services. He enjoyed music and singing, and participated in the choir as a member of Mount Vernon Church of the Brethren.
Ray was foremost a family man who loved his wife, children and grandchildren, and bragged about them to anyone who would listen. He liked to take his grandchildren camping in his RV, and could catch fish on his first cast even if no one around him had seen a fish all day. He loved eating at buffets, mowing the grass and watching football, which he excelled at in his youth.
In addition to his wife, Ray is survived by his daughter, Tammi Rogers Ramsey and husband Mark Ramsey of Lyndhurst; his son, Steven Ray Rogers and wife Jessica Wilke Rogers of Monterey; grandchildren, Aaron Kelly and wife Veronica, Justin Ramsey and wife Lexi, Jordan Ramsey, Mary Anne Rogers and Steven Ray Rogers II; and great-grandchildren, Tristan and Adalyn Kelly. He is also survived by two brothers, Jerry and wife Gaile Rogers, and Mike Rogers; a sister, Nancy Cummings; sisters-in-law, Linda Carden and Debra Hatley; and brother-in-law, Jerry Rose. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Jack Rose, Argil Rose, John Carden, and Bill Hatley.
A funeral service will be held at Mount Vernon Church of the Brethren on Friday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m.
The family will receive visitors at 10 a.m., preceding the service.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Steven Rogers, Mark Ramsey, Aaron Kelly, Justin Ramsey, Steven Rogers II, and Tristan Kelly will serve as pallbearers.
Donations may be made in Ray’s memory to a charity of choice. He would heartily approve of adopting a family or a child for Christmas. Though he sometimes showed a gruff exterior, he had a soft spot for children, and never wanted any child to do without.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes of Waynesboro.
