John Walter Swink, 84, of Waynesboro, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023 at Augusta Health in Fishersville. He was born in Waynesboro, VA, the son of the late Walter A. Swink and the late Bessie B. Swink. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ann S. Hagwood. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Lafferty Swink; son, Timothy A. Swink and daughter, Kimberly S. Hardy (Jody); sister, Susan S. Johnson (Ronald); brother, Gary H. Swink (Dana); grandsons, Alexander Hardy and Joshua Hardy; numerous nieces and nephews.
John graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1957, and went on to join the Army Reserves, stationed in Fort Knox, KY. He was an avid bowler, which led to meeting his future wife. John worked as a draftsman at Southern Stainless for over 30 years. He went on to work at Metfab, before finally retiring to enjoy golf, fishing and traveling across the country with his wife, Jean.
John was one of the original members of Glovier Memorial United Methodist Church, watching it as it was built. He loved his church, serving God, and always put others first. Some of his passions at Glovier were serving as a youth leader, assisting with vacation bible school, singing in the choir, making Chrismon tree ornaments, making apple butter and taking photos for the church directory.
With his kindness and humor, he never met a stranger. He enjoyed telling a good joke, often repeating it if he knew it made someone laugh. Throughout his life, John enjoyed taking his family on vacations to the beach and hosting extended family to ring in the New Year.
Per his request, there will be no visitation or services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Glovier Memorial United Methodist Church. Please share a favorite memory with the family at [email protected], or drop off at Glovier Memorial United Methodist Church if unable to email.
